Choosing Interior Colors That Still Look Right at Night

Judge color in your own room

Paint chips are printed under showroom lighting. Your room has its own light: window orientation, wall reflections, flooring tone and the color temperature of your bulbs all shift the result.

Sample large — at least two feet square — on two different walls, and look at it in morning light, afternoon light and at night with your lamps on.

Undertones matter more than the name

Most disappointing repaints come from undertones, not hue. A warm greige next to cool gray tile reads pink; a cool white next to oak floors reads blue. Hold your candidates against the surfaces you are not replacing.

Match sheen to the room's job

Matte and eggshell flatter walls and hide texture; satin and semi-gloss are washable and belong on trim, doors, kitchens and baths. We help clients lock sheen down at estimate time so the whole house feels intentional.
